It's a rite of passage most of us experience: Kids form bonds with their stuffies. These beloved companions can be a source of comfort, joy, and even adventure. But experienced parents know these deep friendships can also get messy — literally. From sticky fingers to spilled-on snacks and general grime, how do you effectively clean your child's favorite stuffed animal without causing lasting damage? Try this step-by-step process to safely restore your child’s besties to pristine condition with love.

Before you begin

Throwing your child’s stuffed animal in the washing machine and calling it a day is a recipe for disaster. You’re rolling the dice every time, and could end up damaging the beloved toy. Best to follow these easy steps instead:

Gather your supplies

You'll need mild detergent, a clean, soft cloth, and a dry towel. Grab a stain remover for good measure. If your stuffed animal has any electronic components, have a plastic bag on hand. Remove any clothes or accessories that can easily detach, such as hats or bows.

Check the care label

Does the stuffed animal still have a legible label? If so, look for whether the toy is machine washable or requires hand washing. Following these instructions will help ensure the longevity of your child's favorite toy.

If your stuffed animal has electronic components such as sound or light effects, it's essential to take extra precautions. Before washing, make sure these components are securely fastened and protected from water. You can also place the toy in a zip-top plastic bag before washing to prevent any damage.

Pre-treating stains

If your stuffed animal has any noticeable stains, pre-treat them by gently rubbing some mild detergent into the affected area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before moving on to the next step. You can also use a stain remover specifically designed for delicate fabrics.

How to wash a machine-friendly stuffed animal

If the stuffed animal is machine washable, place it in a pillowcase or mesh laundry bag for extra protection. Use the gentle cycle on your washing machine and mild detergent. Once the cycle finishes, remove the stuffed animal and gently squeeze out any excess water. Then, let it air dry.

How to wash a non-machine-friendly stuffed animal

If the stuffed animal isn’t machine-washable, don't worry. You can still give it a good clean.

  1. Dampen a soft cloth with water and a bit of mild detergent, then gently wipe the surface of the stuffed animal.

  2. Rinse the cloth and wipe the toy again to remove any soap.

  3. Squeeze out excess water and let the toy air dry.

  4. Fill a sink or tub with cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent.

  5. Submerge the stuffed animal in water and use your hands to gently scrub any soiled areas.

  6. Once you're satisfied, rinse it thoroughly under cold water until all soap suds are gone.

  7. Squeeze out excess water and let the toy air dry.

Drying

Whether you've machine-washed or hand-washed your stuffed animal, it's vital to let it air dry completely before returning it to its rightful owner. Use a towel to soak up any excess water, then lay the stuffed animal on a clean surface with good air circulation. You can also use a hairdryer on the cool setting to speed up the process if needed. If the care label indicates it's dryer-safe, you can tumble dry on low heat. Letting the toy dry completely is essential to prevent mold or mildew growth.

Cleaning a stuffed animal is a big responsibility, but with these simple steps and some tender loving care, you can make them look as good as new.
