If you have kids, you have probably heard of Roblox, an online world where kids and teens can create their own games, explore other people’s creations, and hang out with friends worldwide. But here’s a big question: Can kids make money on Roblox? The short answer is “yes,” but there are a few important things to remember. Here, we look at ways kids can earn on Roblox while keeping online safety the top priority.
How kids can make money on Roblox
Kids can make money on Roblox in various ways, but there are some critical considerations. Here are five Roblox ideas with the potential to help kids earn money; plus, how parents can help.
1. Create and sell items
One of the most popular ways to make money on Roblox is by designing and selling virtual items in the Roblox Marketplace. This is where players can buy and sell custom clothing, accessories, and even avatar bundles to personalize their in-game characters.
In recent years, only selected creators could be part of the program. But Roblox is starting a gradual rollout that will allow more creators to design and sell virtual items. To participate, creators must have ID verification and an active Premium 1000 or 2200 membership.
If your kids are interested in selling, you'll need to follow Roblox's Marketplace Policy, which lays out the rules for what can and can’t be sold. Also, kids 13-17 need their parent’s permission to create a seller account.
2. Build games and experiences
Kids and teens can create their own games in the Roblox Creator Hub and even make money from them. They can earn through in-game purchases (selling game passes, special avatar accessories, or other perks within their game) and premium payouts when Roblox Premium members spend time in the game.
3. Join the Roblox Affiliate Program
Another way to earn Robux is by referring new players to Roblox or promoting a game through the Roblox Affiliate Program. When kids share their referral link, they earn a percentage of the Robux spent by anyone who signs up or makes a purchase through that link. So, kids can earn extra Robux by getting their friends involved.
4. Become a Roblox video creator
If your kids love making Roblox videos, they could turn that creativity into cash. The Roblox Video Stars Program is for YouTubers and streamers who regularly post high-quality Roblox content. If they build a big enough audience, they can earn money through brand deals, ad revenue, and exclusive perks from Roblox.
5. Live stream on Twitch or Discord
If your kids like to livestream themselves playing Roblox games on platforms like Twitch and Discord (with your permission, of course!), there’s monetary potential. Here’s how it works:
Twitch subscriptions and donations. Viewers can subscribe or donate to support their favorite streamers.
Sponsorships and brand deals. Companies may pay streamers to promote their products.
Discord’s server subscriptions. Creators can offer exclusive content for paying subscribers (only for users 18+).
It’s important to note that Twitch and Discord have separate policies and safety guidelines. For example, Twitch requires streamers to be at least 13 (younger users need parental supervision). Discord’s monetization tools are restricted to 18 and older, but younger players can still build gaming communities and grow their audience for the future.
Roblox safety tips
You can get Greenlight’s full rundown on how to keep your kids safe on Roblox, but here are a few refreshers:
Use parental controls. Enable privacy settings, spend controls, and set up two-step verification and strong passwords.
Be aware of scams. Free Robux offers (especially off-platform) are always fake; Roblox does not offer free Robux. Your kids can report suspicious users by clicking the Report flag in the Roblox menu.
Read the policies. Understand Roblox’s Terms of Use for earning money and account eligibility along with Twitch and Discord safety guidelines for young users.
So, yes, kids can certainly make money on Roblox, with parental guidance and permission as appropriate. Letting your kids explore creatively and have fun in a safe online environment can be part of the goal. For more ways to make money, see our guide to jobs for 13-year-olds.
