Top 11 rideshare safety tips

Rideshare services like Uber™ and Lyft™ have become increasingly popular modes of transportation. However, there are safety risks involved with getting into a car with a stranger. To ensure you and your kids have as safe a rideshare experience as possible, here are 11 rideshare safety tips.

1. Don't order your ride from the curb

The University of Michigan's public safety department advises students to order their rides while they're still indoors. This helps prevent you or your teens from being targeted by someone waiting in the wings for an opportunity.

2. Verify your ride information

Before getting into a rideshare vehicle, make sure the driver matches the information and photo provided in the app and that you do the same. Also, confirm the make and model of the car and its license plate number. When possible, use the app's PIN confirmation service if it offers one for another layer of safety.

3. Share your ride details

Let a friend or family member know when and where you are taking a rideshare trip. You can also share your live location with them through any major app.

4. Sit in the backseat

For added safety, always sit in the backseat of a rideshare vehicle. This gives you more room to exit quickly if necessary and creates physical distance between you and the driver.

5. Wear your seatbelt

Just like any other car ride, buckle up for your safety during a rideshare trip. If the driver does not have working seatbelts, cancel the ride and request a different vehicle.

6. Trust your instincts

If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe at any point during the ride, trust your gut and ask to be let out of the car in a safe location.

7. Don't share personal information

Avoid sharing personal details like your home address or phone number with the driver. Stick to basic conversation topics. If you’re on the phone, avoid conversations involving personal information.

8. Keep valuables hidden

To avoid theft, keep your belongings out of sight and close to you during the ride.

9. Don't get in a car that is not your designated ride

If someone claims to be your rideshare driver but does not match the information in the app, do not get into the car. Wait for your designated ride to arrive.

10. Report any safety concerns

If you encounter any safety issues or concerns during a rideshare trip, report them to the rideshare company immediately.

11. Use emergency features

Most rideshare apps have an emergency button that connects you directly with local authorities in case of an urgent situation. Familiarize yourself with this feature and how to use it.

Following these rideshare safety tips can help ensure a safer experience for both passengers and drivers. Remember, your safety is always the top priority when using a rideshare service.
