What is incognito mode?
Incognito mode, also known as private browsing, is a feature in Google Chrome that allows you to browse the web without saving your history or cookies. The benefit of using incognito mode is that it provides additional privacy and security when browsing the internet. Your activity will not be tracked or saved on your device. This can be useful for various reasons, such as preventing websites from accessing your personal information or keeping your searches private.
How to use incognito mode on Chrome
If you’re on a desktop or laptop, look for the three dots in the top right corner of your Chrome browser. Click on those (or “More,” if that’s what you see) and select "New incognito window." You should see the incognito icon in the top corner.
If you're more of a keyboard shortcut person, you can press Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows) or Command + Shift + N (Mac) to open an incognito window.
How to launch incognito mode on an iPhone
On iOS smartphones, launch a new Chrome tab. At the bottom of the page, look for the plus sign. Next to it, you will see a sideways smiley face box. Click the smiley face. That will launch a new “blank” page. On the top of that page, select the incognito icon – it looks like a detective hat with eyeglasses underneath.
Browsing incognito
Once you're in incognito mode, it's business as usual. You can search for anything you want or browse any site. Only none of it will be saved to your browsing history. It's like you were never there!
Wrapping up your private session
Done browsing? Just close the incognito window, and your private session ends. It's as simple as that. And don't worry about accidentally closing your regular Chrome windows, as incognito mode only applies to the specific window you opened.
Am I really “anonymous”?
While incognito mode provides added privacy, it's important to note that it does not make you completely anonymous online. Your internet service provider and the websites you visit can still see your activity. Additionally, if you download any files or bookmarks while in incognito mode, they will still be saved on your device.
Proceed with caution
Now that you know what incognito mode is and how to use it on Chrome, use it wisely. It's not a foolproof way to protect your privacy, but it can add an extra layer of security when browsing the web.
Next time you need to search for something sensitive or want more privacy, try incognito mode. If you're handling important documents you need to keep private and secure, consider adding a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to your browsing experience. A VPN is a security layer that encrypts your internet connection, making it even more difficult for anyone to track or access your online activity or data.
Other ways to use incognito mode on Chrome
Incognito mode isn't just about private browsing. It has some other cool uses, too. For instance, if you're tired of hitting paywalls on websites that limit free articles per month, incognito mode can sometimes reset this limit. However, some media outlets are hip to this trick, so it doesn’t always work.
Are you into web development? Incognito mode doesn't save cookies or cache so you can test websites as a new user.
And here's another neat trick: You can use incognito mode to log into different accounts and usernames on the same website without constantly logging out and back in. Just open multiple incognito windows, and voila. Easy access to all your accounts.
Security and privacy considerations
As a reminder, incognito mode doesn't make you completely anonymous. Your internet service provider (ISP) and the websites you visit can still see your activity.
Also, if you choose to save a password while in incognito mode, it'll be saved on your device. Some extensions, like ad blockers, might still track and save data while you're in incognito mode.
Incognito mode can be helpful for browsing the web without leaving a trace on your device, but it's important to understand its limitations. Use it wisely and stay safe while browsing.
