Toilet paper in the fridge? The newest viral cleaning hack

You may have seen the latest cleaning hack making its rounds on social media: storing toilet paper in the fridge. While it might seem odd, some people swear by this method to keep their fridge smelling fresh. Here's everything you need to know about this unconventional cleaning hack.

Why are people putting toilet paper in the fridge?

According to many social posts, strategically sticking toilet paper in fridge corners is thought to absorb any foul odors, leaving your refrigerator smelling fresh and clean. Supposedly it also helps regulate humidity levels and prevent mold growth by soaking up moisture.

How do you use this cleaning hack?

Simply place a roll of toilet paper on one of the shelves in your fridge, preferably near the back, where it won't get in the way. Replace it every three weeks - but not in your bathroom. Toss that refrigerator toilet paper roll into the trash.

Does it really work?

While no solid scientific evidence supports this cleaning hack, many people swear by it and claim that their fridge smells fresher. Others say the hotel industry has used toilet paper in the fridge trick for years.

As you can imagine, results may vary depending on what’s in your fridge and how often you open and close it. The consensus seems to be that it’s somewhat effective for short periods.

Are there any downsides to this method?

That depends. Some people may find it unappealing to have toilet paper in their fridge. And, while toilet paper may absorb moisture, it’s not a natural deodorizer like baking soda, so it likely isn’t as effective at eliminating odors.

You also have to swap out toilet paper in the fridge more frequently - every three weeks vs. every three months for baking soda.

Other tips for a fresh-smelling fridge

If you're not sold on the idea of storing toilet paper in your fridge, there are other methods you can try to keep it smelling fresh. Along with baking soda, you can clean old food regularly, use alternative deodorizers like activated charcoal, cumin oil, or coffee grounds, and store strong-smelling foods in airtight containers.

Does toilet paper in the fridge work? While it may not be for everyone, trying can’t hurt! Luckily, if it doesn’t work, there are plenty of other ways to keep your fridge smelling clean and fresh.
