Celebrating Aunts Day: 10 ways to show your love
Share via
Aunts often hold a special place in our hearts. Some are like second mothers, role models, friends, or all of these rolled into one. On Aunts Day, officially called “Auntie’s Day,” we have the perfect opportunity to show our love and appreciation for these amazing women.
History of Auntie’s Day
Auntie’s Day was created by Melanie Notkin in 2009 to honor aunts of all kinds – whether biological, chosen, or honorary. Notkin noticed there were many holidays dedicated to mothers, fathers, grandparents, and even siblings, but no official day for aunts. So, she decided to create one on the fourth Sunday in July.
10 ways to celebrate aunts on Auntie’s Day
Spend quality time together
Plan a fun day out with your aunt, whether going to the movies, trying out a new restaurant, or doing an activity you both enjoy. This is a great way to bond and create memories.
Send a thoughtful gift or card
Show your appreciation by putting it in writing to your aunt. It could be something she has been wanting, a personalized item, or a heartfelt note expressing your love and gratitude - not just on Auntie’s Day, but always.
Cook or bake together
If you and your aunt enjoy making food and hanging out in the kitchen, make it a special activity by preparing a meal or dessert together. You can even learn some family recipes and create new ones to pass down for generations to come.
Create a scrapbook or photo album
Gather old photos and mementos and put together a scrapbook or photo album with your aunt. This is a fun way to reminisce on memories and celebrate your relationship.
Have a girls' night in
Plan a relaxing night at home with your favorite auntie (or aunties!). You can watch movies, do each other's nails, or just chat and catch up. This is a great way to unwind and show your aunt how much she means to you.
Volunteer together
Giving back is a meaningful way to spend time with your aunt. Find a cause or organization that you both care about and volunteer together.
Share your favorite memories on social media
Use the hashtag #AuntsDay to share your favorite memories and photos with your aunt on social media. This is a great way to publicly show your love and appreciation for her.
Give the gift of experience
Instead of a tangible present, gift your aunt a day or an experience she'll cherish. This could be tickets to a theater show, a painting class, or a certificate for a day at the spa.
Start a new tradition
Auntie's Day is the perfect time to start a new tradition together. Plan a recurring outing, like an annual picnic in the park or a seasonal crafting day, that you can look forward to each year.
Write a letter of appreciation
In a world where digital communication is the norm, a handwritten letter stands out. Write a letter to your aunt, telling her how much she means to you and recalling fond shared memories.
The essence of Auntie’s Day lies in the opportunity to express your love and appreciation for these extraordinary women in your life. While they may not be our mothers, they can play a vital role in shaping who we are. If you’ve got a special aunt in your life, make Auntie’s Day a day to demonstrate our gratitude for all they do.
