The ultimate packing list for your next vacation

Packing for a trip can be overwhelming, especially if you're prone to overpacking or don't know what to bring. To make your next vacation stress-free and organized, use this ultimate packing list as your guide. We've included all the essentials and some bonus items to help make your trip a success.

Before you start packing

“The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.” Whoever said that was probably great at packing. Before diving into the actual packing, here are some tips to help keep you organized and efficient:

  • Make a vacation packing list: Write down everything you need to bring ahead of time, so you don't forget anything. It also helps avoid overpacking.

  • Check the weather forecast: Instead of planning for every possibility, building around weather helps keep your options in check.

  • Consider your activities: Will you be walking a lot? Going out to fancy dinners or lounging by the fire? Plan accordingly.

  • Limit yourself: Try to limit yourself to one bag per person. This can help make traveling easier and save you from overpacking.

Clothing essentials

When it comes to packing clothes, versatility is key. Stick with neutral or coordinating colors and pack items that can easily be mixed and matched. Here are some clothing essentials to pack:

  • Tops: Bring enough shirts for each day of your trip, plus a few extra in case of spills or unexpected events. Include a nicer blouse or shirt for dressier occasions.

  • Bottoms: Choose bottoms based on the climate and planned activities. Pack versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down, such as jeans, shorts or skirts, and leggings for layering.

  • Undergarments/socks: Bring enough underwear and socks for each day, plus a few extra. Consider packing a pair of compression socks if you'll be doing a lot of walking or flying.

  • Dresses/jumpsuits: For an easy outfit option with minimal packing.

  • Swimwear/beach cover-up: If your trip includes beach time, don't forget to pack your swimsuit (or three) and a cover-up.

  • Jacket/Sweater: Even if you're traveling to a warm destination, it's always a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings or unexpected weather changes.

General travel essentials

  • Travel documents: Bring your driver’s license or passport, any other required visas or ID cards and official forms, a major credit card or debit card for ID purposes, and printed copies of your tickets and boarding passes (in case your phone dies).

  • Money/credit cards/traveler's checks: Make sure you have enough cash and/or credit and debit cards to cover expenses during your trip. Consider bringing traveler's checks or equivalent for added security.

  • Phone/charger/adapter: Don't forget your phone and charger, and make sure to bring an adapter if you're traveling to a different country with different outlets. If you have earbuds or headphones, bring those for the plane!

  • Toiletries: Pack essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, and any medications you may need. Pro Tip: Remember to follow TSA guidelines for liquids, which include many common toiletries. All carry-on liquids must be under 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Anything larger must go into checked bagggae.

Accessories

  • Shoes: Bring a comfortable pair for walking, a dressier option for nights out, and any specific shoes needed for planned activities (hiking boots, flip flops, etc.).

  • Hat/sunglasses/scarf: These are all versatile accessories that can add style and function to your outfits. But if you bring only one: Sunglasses are a must.

  • Jewelry: Choose a few staple pieces that can be worn with multiple outfits.

  • Purse/backpack: A small purse or backpack is super useful for carrying your daily essentials while exploring your destination.

Bonus items to consider

  • Electronics: Depending on your trip, you may want to bring a camera, laptop, or tablet. Don't forget chargers and any necessary adapters or cords.

  • Camera/charger: If you plan on taking pictures during your trip, don't forget to pack your camera and charger.

  • Sunscreen/bug spray: Protect yourself from the sun and any pesky bugs by packing sunscreen and insect repellent. But remember those TSA liquid limits!

  • Plastic bag for dirty clothes: Keep your suitcase fresh!

  • Books or audiobooks: In case you have down time on the plane or better yet - beach time.

Don't forget these important items

  • Medications: Make sure to pack any necessary medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Again, follow all TSA guidelines for liquid limits and/or necessary paperwork, containers, etc.

  • Contact lenses/glasses/extra contacts: If you wear contact lenses or glasses, make sure to pack your supplies and bring extra in case of emergencies.

  • First aid kit: It's always a good idea to have basic first aid supplies on hand, especially if you'll be doing outdoor activities.

  • Work items - laptop/tablet/notes: If it's a business trip.

Packing for a vacation is a skill that can be learned. By following this ultimate packing list and considering your specific needs, you’ll be a pro at packing everything you need for a successful trip. Happy travels!
