What to do on Father's Day: Celebrating dads

Each year in June, many of us come together to celebrate the magic of dads. A lot of families struggle to figure out what to do on Father's Day, so we've compiled a list of ideas as unique and special as your dear old dad.

Tried-and-true ideas for a memorable Father's Day

Mix, match, and riff off of these activities to come up with something truly special that the dads in your life will love.

  1. BBQ - You can't go wrong with this classic activity. Fire up the grill and cook up some of your dad's favorite foods while enjoying quality time together in the backyard.

  2. Fishing trip - If your dad loves the great outdoors, a fishing trip makes a great solo or family outing. Spend the day casting lines, swapping stories, and enjoying nature together.

  3. Hey, sports fans - Does Dad have a favorite team? Take him out to the ballgame, with or without kids.

  4. Go golfing - If your dad is a golfer, treat him to a day on the course. Or splurge on a lesson. Even if you're not an avid golfer yourself, just being out there together makes for a fun Father's Day.

  5. Movie marathon - Plan a movie marathon featuring all of your dad's favorite films or genres. Don't forget to include some snacks and drinks for a true movie-watching experience.

  6. Road trip - Hit the road with your dad and explore new places together. Whether it's a nearby town or a destination getaway, the journey’s all about Dad.

  7. Culinary delight - Take your dad to his favorite restaurant for a delicious meal or cook a special dinner at home. Either way, the food will make him smile.

  8. Hiking and camping adventure - For adventurous dads, plan a day of hiking followed by an overnight camping trip in nature. It's a great way to bond with outdoorsy dads and create memories that will last forever.

  9. Brewery or distillery tour - If your dad enjoys trying new beers or spirits, take him on a local brewery or distillery tour. Be sure to book a ride so you can cheer together safely.

  10. DIY gifts - Make this one from the heart. Handmade presents carry a personal touch that store-bought gifts often lack.

  11. Go, go, gadgets! If your dad loves technology, invest in the latest gadget he's been eyeing.

  12. Give back - Spend the day doing volunteer work for a cause your father is passionate about.

  13. Book club - If he's a book lover, read the same book and spend some time discussing it.

  14. Hobby classes - Maybe he loves to sketch or wants to master photography or cooking.  Treat him to a class or go together.

  15. Star gazing - Spend the evening looking for shooting stars like you did when you were a kid. Head to a local observatory or bust out the binoculars in your own backyard.

  6. Spa day at home: Give your dad the gift of relaxation with a homemade spa day. Send him out for his favorite massage or try an in-home service so he doesn’t even have to get dressed.

  7. Personalized storybook: Write and illustrate a story about your dad, highlighting his unique qualities and your shared memories.

  8. Shopping: Treat your dad to a shopping spree, either online or at the mall. You can help him find cool new clothes and accessories that reflect his unique style.
