Tipping 101: Should you tip for takeout?

When ordering takeout from a restaurant, it's common to wonder whether or not you should leave a tip. Tipping for takeout became prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic because it was often the only option, and many restaurants were flooded with customers. Tipping a normal 15-20% was fairly common during that time. Now, tipping is most often associated with dine-in service again. But adding a tip for to-go orders hasn’t gone away. There are some things to remember when tipping for takeout. Here's a breakdown of the etiquette.

1. Check if there is a service fee

Some restaurants may include a service fee for takeout orders, which usually means you don't need to leave an additional tip. Check your receipt or ask the staff beforehand to avoid double-tipping (or under-tipping).

2. Consider the size of your order

If you're picking up a large or detailed order that requires extra packaging, preparation, or substitutions, it's considerate to leave a little more tip as a token of appreciation for the additional effort.

3. Factor in customer service

Were there questions the staff helped you work through? Did they go above and beyond to make sure your order was correct and it’s still hot and fresh? Consider leaving a generous tip to show appreciation for their excellent customer service.

4. Take note of the restaurant's policy

Some restaurants may not allow employees to accept tips for takeout orders. Always double-check for that and honor their preferred policies and rules.

5. Adjust based on the type of restaurant

If you're getting takeout from a restaurant that’s typically dine-in, they often need to package the food strategically to preserve its flavor integrity or how it’s meant to be displayed. For restaurants where special to-go preparation is required, it's common courtesy to leave a tip of at least 10-15%.

6. Use your discretion

Ultimately, the decision to tip for takeout is up to you. If you feel that the service was exceptional and deserving of a tip, then go ahead and leave one. If not, it's okay to skip the tip.

Tipping is a gesture of appreciation for good service, but it's not mandatory. Many say that tipping 10-15% on takeout orders is a good rule of thumb to account for the extra work it takes to package items separately and safely, add utensils and napkins, and ensure your food is hot and ready when you arrive.
