Classic outdoor games for kids that encourage movement

Looking for ways to keep kids active and engaged? Here's a comprehensive list of outdoor games that are not only fun but also encourage physical activity and interaction. These games are age-specific, appropriate, and fun for kids of all ages! You might even recognize some of them from your own childhood.

Try these fan-favorite outdoor games that can bring any backyard or park to life.

  1. Capture the flag: This classic game involves two teams trying to capture each other's flag and bring it back to their territory without being tagged.

  2. Obstacle course: Get creative with what you have around! Set up a course using items like cones, ropes, and hula hoops. Kids can race against time or each other.

  3. Freeze tag: A variation of tag where the person who is 'it' freezes the other players by tagging them. Frozen players can be unfrozen by another player who crawls through their legs.

  4. Scavenger hunt: Create a list of items for the kids to find in your yard or nearby park. Tailor the list to fit the age group and watch their excitement as they search for treasures.

  5. Four square: All you need is a ball and some chalk to draw your court. This game, perfect for four players, involves bouncing the ball in your square and then into someone else's, following a set of rules.

  6. Duck, duck, goose: A group of kids sits in a circle while the "it" person walks around tapping each on the head saying "duck" until they choose one to be "goose." The goose then chases the "it" person around the circle trying to tag them before they take their seat.

  7. Kick the can: This game combines hide and seek with tag. One person guards a can while others hide. The goal is to kick the can before being tagged.

  8. Red rover: Kids form two lines holding hands and call someone from the opposite line to break through their hands with the chant, "Red Rover, Red Rover, send [name] right over."

  9. Hopscotch: Using chalk, draw a series of numbered squares on the ground. Players throw a small stone into the first square and hop through the numbers, retrieving the stone on the way back.

  10. Hide and seek: A timeless game where one person closes their eyes and counts while others hide. After counting, they seek out everyone, who then tries to make it back to "base" before being found.

  11. Simon says: One person is Simon and gives commands to the others. If Simon says "Simon says jump," everyone jumps. But if Simon just says "jump," those who jump are out. It's a fun way to teach kids about listening carefully!

Remember, these games are more than just fun. They're a way to help kids develop physical coordination, team skills, and problem-solving abilities in an engaging, hands-on way. Plus, they're a fantastic opportunity for children to make lasting memories outdoors. And think of all the great conversations you could have about your shared childhood experiences! Tag! You're it!
