Key takeaways
LifeLock is one of the best-known names in identity theft protection for adults, but its family plans don’t fit every household. On a LifeLock family plan, kids get social media monitoring, restoration help, and insurance, but no credit monitoring and no credit freeze assistance.
Additionally, LifeLock now sells two separate product families with overlapping names: the standalone LifeLock plans and the Norton 360 with LifeLock bundles. They carry different prices, insurance, and features. Family pricing climbs fast. Adding a second adult and children to the mid-tier Advanced plan runs $479.99 a year, billed annually.
The alternatives below approach family coverage differently. Some cover more people. Some cover children more deeply. One folds identity protection into the app you already use to pay your kids’ allowance.
Comparing LifeLock alternatives
The five plans below cover families at different price points and with different strengths. We compared them to LifeLock Advanced for two adults and kids using each provider’s US pricing as of October 2026.

1. Greenlight Family Shield
Family Shield is Greenlight’s premium plan. It adds identity protection and account monitoring to the Greenlight app, so one subscription covers kids, parents, and older adults in the household. Each person has the app on their phone, and parents can link an older adult’s checking, savings, investing, and credit card accounts to get alerts about suspicious activities and fraud.⁵
Monthly fee: $19.98 per family
Covers: Up to 5 kids, 2 parents, and 2 older adults
Risk-free trial: 30 days*
Features:
Dark web monitoring across 11 data types, including Social Security number, passport, and medical ID, available for parents, kids, and older adults⁵
Data broker removal and ongoing scan

TransUnion credit lock and unlock
Financial account monitoring with suspicious activity alerts, including for older adults’ accounts at other institutions⁵
$1 million identity theft insurance per person with no deductible, and $100,000 deceptive transfer fraud coverage⁴
Identity restoration with dedicated recovery specialists
Family location sharing, place alerts, SOS alerts, crash detection, and driving reports††
Debit cards¹, 6% savings², 1% cash back³, investing, chores, and allowance
Best for: Families who already manage money together in one app and want identity protection for three generations without buying a second subscription.
Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
✓ Covers kids, parents, and grandparents on one plan | ✕ Credit lock is TransUnion only |
✓ Insurance limits apply per person, not per family | ✕ Fraud coverage only applies to accounts linked for monitoring |
✓ Bundles money management, location tracking, and driving safety†† | ✕ No VPN, antivirus, password, or home title monitoring |
How Greenlight Family Shield compares to LifeLock
Choose Greenlight Family Shield ($19.98/mo) if you want identity protection bundled with money management, location sharing, and driving safety for the whole family. LifeLock ($40 for LifeLock Advanced) is a better fit if you specifically need home title monitoring, since that, along with 401(k)/investment account monitoring, is only available on LifeLock’s highest tier plan.
2. Aura
Aura is an all-in-one digital safety service that bundles identity monitoring, device security, and parental controls. Its family plan covers five adults and an unlimited number of children, and it’s the only service here that helps you freeze a child’s credit at all three bureaus.
Monthly fee: $32 billed annually, or $50 month to month
Covers: 5 adults, unlimited children
Free trial: 14 days
Features:
Three-bureau credit monitoring on every plan
Child SSN alerts and three-bureau child credit freeze requests
Sex offender geo-alerts within a one-mile radius
Parental controls with filtering, screen time, and Pause the Internet
Safe Gaming with in-game voice and text monitoring across 200+ PC games
Data broker removal across 425+ sites
VPN, antivirus, and password manager
$1 million identity theft insurance per adult with a US-based case manager
Best for: Large or blended families who want identity protection and online safety tools in one subscription.
Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
✓ Three-bureau credit monitoring on every tier | ✕ Antivirus doesn’t cover iOS, and the engine is unnamed |
✓ Covers five adults and unlimited kids | ✕ Renewal pricing isn’t published anywhere before you buy |
✓ Only service here that freezes a child’s credit at all three bureaus | ✕ A March 2026 vishing attack exposed roughly 900,000 marketing records |
How Aura compares to LifeLock
Choose Aura if you need to cover more than two adults, or want antivirus, a VPN, and parental controls bundled in without a separate Norton add-on. Aura also includes three-bureau credit monitoring on its cheapest plan, while LifeLock reserves that for Advanced and above, so if you want that without upgrading tiers, Aura has the edge there too. Stick with LifeLock Advanced if the highest per-adult insurance ceiling matters more than price or household size.
3. IDShield
IDShield comes from LegalShield and takes a different approach to recovery. Rather than coaching you through the cleanup, IDShield assigns a licensed private investigator who takes limited power of attorney and contacts the bureaus, the Social Security Administration, the FTC, and your banks on your behalf.
Monthly fee: $29.95 for one-bureau, $34.95 for three-bureau
Covers: 2 adults and dependent children under 18, with restoration help for dependents up to age 26
Free trial: None
Features:
Licensed private investigators who work the case directly and keep it open for 120 days after resolution
Up to $3 million in reimbursement
One-bureau or three-bureau credit monitoring with a monthly credit score tracker
Child SSN monitoring and child social media monitoring
Sex offender alerts with an adjustable radius up to five miles
Cyberbullying support that connects families to schools and counselors
Trend Micro antivirus, VPN, password manager, and parental controls
Dark web monitoring covering crypto wallets, gamer tags, medical IDs, and passports
Best for: Families who want hands-on restoration help
Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
✓ Investigators act on your behalf under power of attorney | ✕ Monthly billing only, with no annual discount |
✓ Higher per-adult reimbursement ceiling than LifeLock Advanced | ✕ Live support runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT weekdays, with 24/7 only for emergencies |
✓ Strong child monitoring and cyberbullying support | ✕ Offers a credit freeze, not a credit lock |
How IDShield compares to LifeLock
Choose IDShield for hands-on recovery, a licensed investigator acts on your behalf with written authorization rather than just coaching you through it. Stick with LifeLock if you want data broker removal to run automatically, as IDShield’s PrivacyCheck finds exposures but leaves removal up to you.
4. Experian
Experian is one of the three credit bureaus, and it also offers a consumer protection product. With direct access to credit data, it’s the only service here with a genuinely free tier, though you’ll need the Premium tier for the family plan that includes coverage for children.
Monthly fee: $24.99
Covers: 2 adults and up to 10 children
Free trial: 7 days
Features:
3-bureau credit monitoring with quarterly three-bureau reports and FICO Scores
Daily Experian FICO Score
Dark web surveillance
Financial transaction and account monitoring
Monthly privacy scans with help removing your information from covered people-finder sites
Experian CreditLock
Social security tracing
$1 million identity theft insurance with a $0 deductible, underwritten by AIG
Best for: Families who want credit-focused protection and FICO scores from a credit bureau.
Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
✓ Experian Boost can build credit and improve scores with on-time cell phone, utilities, rent, and insurance payments | ✕ No parental controls, VPN, antivirus, or password manager |
✓ Daily FICO Score 8, the score lenders use | ✕ CreditLock covers the Experian file only |
✓ Identity theft insurance has a $0 deductible | ✕ No discount for paying yearly |
How Experian Premium compares to LifeLock
Choose Experian for direct access to real credit-bureau data and a free tier option. LifeLock may be a better option if you prefer broader monitoring that includes home title or 401(k) plus a higher insurance ceiling that goes up to $3 million per adult on its Total tier plan.
5. McAfee+ Advanced Family
McAfee+ started as antivirus software and now bundles identity monitoring and privacy tools with it. The Advanced Family Plan covers up to two adults and four children under 18, with antivirus, a VPN, and parental controls on unlimited devices.
Monthly fee: $10 a month ($119.99 annually) for the first year, then $269.99 per year at renewal
Covers: 2 adults and 4 children under 18
Free trial: None
Features:
Antivirus, VPN, and scam detector for texts, emails, and videos on unlimited devices
Parental controls
Identity monitoring and alerts, identity restoration support, and lost wallet protection
1-bureau credit monitoring with a monthly credit score and report
Personal data cleanup, which sends removal requests to data broker sites
Up to $1 million in identity theft coverage
Best for: Families who want device security and parental controls at a low first-year price
Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
✓ Lowest first-year price of the group | ✕ Renews at a price more than double the first year |
✓ Antivirus, VPN, and parental controls on unlimited devices | ✕ 1-bureau monitoring, with credit lock and $2M coverage on Ultimate plan only |
✓ Personal data cleanup sends removal requests for you | ✕ Identity theft coverage isn’t available in New York |
How McAfee+ Advanced Family compares to LifeLock
Choose McAfee+ if you want antivirus, a VPN, and parental controls bundled in at a low first-year price. But know that it renews at about $269.99/year, more than double the first-year rate. Go with LifeLock if you want three-bureau credit monitoring and a credit lock now, since McAfee only offers those on its pricier Ultimate plan.
Which LifeLock alternative is right for your family?
LifeLock does several things well. Its top plans reimburse up to $3 million per adult, it offers restoration specialists around the clock, and it monitors home titles, 401(k) accounts, and phone number takeovers. The five alternatives each trade some of that for something else, so the right pick depends on what your family needs most.
If you want identity protection plus kids’ money tools, location sharing, and coverage for older parents, choose Greenlight Family Shield.
If you want the most complete child-specific protection, including three-bureau credit freezes for minors and parental controls, Aura is the strongest option.
If you’d rather hand the recovery work to someone with legal authority to act for you, IDShield is worth the monthly-only pricing.
If credit is your main concern and you want FICO scores from the source, Experian Premium is the most direct route, and Experian also has a free tier that costs nothing to try.
If you want antivirus, a VPN, and parental controls in one plan, McAfee+ Advanced Family is worth a look.

FAQs
Can identity thieves use my child’s Social Security number?
Yes, and it’s common because children have clean credit files nobody checks. About 1 in 50 children are victims of identity theft, and the fraud often goes unnoticed until the child applies for a loan or a first job. Monitoring a child’s SSN and freezing their credit are the two most effective steps.
Is identity theft insurance worth it?
The insurance reimburses costs you incur recovering from theft, including lost wages, legal fees, and document replacement, rather than paying you the amount stolen. Most policies are a single limit with sub-limits inside it, so a headline figure of $1 million doesn’t mean $1 million in cash. Read the summary of benefits before assuming a bigger number is better.
Can I freeze my child’s credit myself for free?
Yes. Each of the three bureaus is required by law to place a free freeze on a minor’s credit file when a parent or guardian requests it with the right documentation. Services like Aura submit those requests for you, which saves time but isn’t something you have to pay for.
What’s the difference between credit monitoring and a credit freeze?
Monitoring tells you after something happens to your credit file, and a freeze stops new accounts from being opened in the first place. A freeze is the stronger protection and it’s free. Monitoring is useful for catching what a freeze can’t, including existing-account fraud and misuse of your SSN outside the credit system.
Methodology
We compared each option to LifeLock Advanced for two adults and kids. We pulled current pricing directly from the provider’s own plan pages in October 2026, and noted the renewal price separately when it differs from the first-year rate. We looked at price, how many adults and children each plan covers, credit monitoring and lock tools, reimbursement limits, device security and parental controls, and extras like data broker removal, what recovery support looks like when something goes wrong, and what else comes bundled in. We reviewed each provider’s summary of insurance benefits rather than the headline number, because the structure behind that number varies. Prices, coverage, and terms change, so confirm current details with each provider before you buy.
