What is identity theft insurance and how does it work?
Identity theft insurance — also called identity theft coverage — reimburses the costs of recovering your identity after someone uses your personal information to commit fraud. It typically pays for legal fees, lost wages, notary and mailing costs, and the expense of disputing fraudulent loans, credit cards, or unemployment claims opened in your name, and usually pairs with restoration specialists who do the recovery work with you. Importantly, it covers the cost of recovering from identity theft — not the stolen funds themselves.
Up to $1M in restoration costs, no deductible.
Greenlight Family Shield includes up to $1 million in identity theft restoration coverage, provided by a leading insurer, with no deductible. The shared household limit covers everyone on the plan — up to five kids, two adults, and two senior loved ones — and a dedicated restoration specialist files and works the claim with you.
Why it matters
Identity theft costs more time than money.
For most families, the hardest part of identity theft isn't the money lost — it's the months spent cleaning it up.
600+ hrs
Hours victims spend over 6+ months untangling identity theft.
How it works
If identity theft happens, here's what happens next.
Three steps from detection to reimbursement.
File a claim from the Greenlight app
Open Greenlight, tap Accounts → Coverage, and tap Start claim.
Complete the claim
Select who you're filing for, briefly describe the loss and when it happened, choose the affected account (if applicable), then review the details and tap Submit claim. Prefer the phone? Call our partner Chubb at 1-800-CLAIMS-0 (1-800-252-4670).
You get reimbursed
Covered restoration costs and lost wages are reimbursed up to the $1M policy limit, with no deductible required.

How much identity theft coverage does Greenlight offer?
Greenlight Family Shield covers up to $1 million in identity restoration costs with no deductible, provided by a leading insurer.
Coverage includes losses from fraudulent loans, credit cards, or unemployment claims made in a family member's name.§
What does the coverage include?
The policy reimburses real, documented restoration costs — not just the fraud loss itself.
Legal fees — defending against businesses and collection agencies, removing unfair judgments, or challenging your credit report
Notary and certified-mailing fees, plus telephone expenses
Fees to reapply for a loan rejected due to incorrect credit information
Lost earnings from taking time off work to fix the theft
Identity-theft relief service fees to restore your accounts and credit standing
Up to $5,000 more for travel or dependent care needed while you travel to fix identity theft; replacing official documents, or bail bonds and emergency legal help if you're arrested
What is NOT covered?
The policy reimburses restoration costs, not the fraud itself — and several situations are excluded.
Acts by a family member, a current/former guardian or spouse, or anyone who lives (or has lived) with you
Pre-existing identity fraud — circumstances known before your continuous coverage began
Business activities, or losses from war, government action, or unauthorized digital currency
Dishonest, fraudulent, criminal, or intentional acts by you or a family member
Money a loved one was tricked into willingly sending (that's deceptive transfer fraud, covered separately up to $100K)
Losses while in a U.S. State Department “Do not travel” area
Who provides the insurance?
Identity theft coverage is provided under a group Master Policy underwritten by ACE Property & Casualty Insurance Company, a Chubb company.
Insurance is offered through Acrisure, LLC. Coverage activates automatically when you sign up for Family Shield — there's no separate application — and a complete copy of the Master Policy is available from Greenlight on request.
Is the $1M per person or per household?
The $1 million is a household limit — it covers everyone on your Family Shield plan, not a separate $1M for each person.
A single subscription extends identity theft restoration coverage to your whole family — kids, adults, and senior loved ones — drawing on the shared $1M limit per coverage period.
Does the coverage extend to my children?
Yes. Child identity fraud is one of the fastest-growing categories of identity theft.
The $1M coverage on Family Shield extends to up to five children, two adults, and two senior loved ones on the same household plan, at no extra per-person fee.
How long after signing up does coverage start?
Coverage activates immediately when you complete the Family Shield subscription.
Restoration benefits apply to identity theft incidents that occur on or after the subscription start date. Pre-existing fraud (discovered before signup) is not covered.

The essentials about how Greenlight Family Shield works.
What Greenlight Family Shield includes in one subscription
Greenlight Family Shield combines identity and credit protection, family location safety, and kids' & seniors' debit cards in one $19.98/month subscription — so most families don't need a separate app for each. Here's how to choose:
Choose an identity-protection service like LifeLock if you want credit and identity monitoring for individuals; they do not include kids' money tools or family location tracking.
Choose a family-safety app like Life360 if you want location and driving tracking; they do not include credit lock, ID theft protection, or kids' money tools.
Choose a money app like Cash App if all you want is a free debit card; they typically do not include credit-bureau monitoring or family location tracking.
Choose Greenlight Family Shield if you want financial, digital, and physical protection for your whole family — kids, parents, and grandparents — in one place.
