What is phone insurance and protection?
Phone insurance reimburses the cost to repair or replace a phone that's damaged, lost, or stolen, in exchange for a monthly fee plus a per-claim deductible. It's sold by carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile and by standalone providers like Asurion and AppleCare+, typically for $10–$18 per month per line with deductibles that can run $99–$229. Covered events usually include cracked screens, drops, liquid damage, mechanical or electrical breakdown, theft, and loss.

Straight answers to the questions families ask most.
Does Greenlight Family Shield include phone insurance?
Yes. Cell phone protection covers the repair or replacement of a cardholder's phone if it's damaged, stolen, lost, or suffers a mechanical or electrical breakdown.
Coverage is provided under a group policy issued by Virginia Surety Company, Inc. and is not available to residents of New York.†
Whose phone is covered?
The cardholder's cell phone — up to 5 kids
To be eligible, the account must be active and the cardholder must have the Greenlight app downloaded on the covered phone. Coverage limits apply per Covered Card.
What types of loss are covered?
Accidental damage, breakdown (mechanical or electrical failure), plus theft and loss.
Cracked or shattered screens
Liquid or water damage
Mechanical or electrical breakdown in normal service

Loss
What's NOT covered?
A handful of standard exclusions apply.
Phones bought for resale, professional, or commercial use
Cosmetic damage or scratches that don't affect function (cracked screens are covered)
Accessories beyond the original equipment in the box
Loss while the phone is in the care of a common carrier (airline, USPS, UPS, FedEx)
Damage from fraud, abuse, gradual deterioration, defects, recalls, war, or an Act of God (flood, hurricane, earthquake)
Voluntary parting with the phone, or misdelivery
What's the deductible?
$25 per claim.
Coverage pays up to $600 per claim, with a maximum of 2 claims per calendar year and up to $1,000 per calendar year per Covered Card. Claims must be filed within 60 days of the event.
How does this compare to carrier insurance (Verizon / AT&T)?
Family Shield phone protection is included in your plan at no separate cost; carrier insurance typically runs $10–$18/mo per line.
It covers repair or replacement for cracked screens, drops, liquid damage, mechanical breakdown, theft, and loss — up to $600 per claim, with a $25 deductible. Because it's already part of your Family Shield plan, many families can drop a paid carrier add-on and let this cover their kids' phones instead.
When does coverage start?
Coverage starts on the 1st of the month.
If you joined Greenlight Family Shield after the 1st, your coverage starts on the 1st of the following month — for example, if you joined on January 12th, your family will be covered starting on February 1st.
